Task Delegation and Burnout Trade-offs Among Primary Care Providers and Nurses in Veterans Affairs Patient Aligned Care Teams
A survey of 777 primary care provider-nurse dyads in VA ambulatory PACTs found that 48% of providers and 35% of nurses reported burnout. Providers who delegated more clinical tasks had lower odds of burnout (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.49-0.78), while nurses absorbing more delegated reliance had higher odds (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.33-2.5). The paper supports a transparent, multi-user task surface where the team can see and balance who is carrying what.

A study of 115 physicians across 48 community-based ambulatory clinics found physicians spent an average of 0.66 hours (40 minutes) per 8 scheduled hours on the inbox and processed 33.3 messages per day. Adopted efficiency tools (message triage, custom QuickActions, encounter specialists, message pools) showed no significant reduction in inbox time after adjusting for physician and panel characteristics. The paper supports the case for a fresh, focused task triage surface that lives where providers already work.
