Physician Time Spent Using the Electronic Health Record During Outpatient Encounters: A Descriptive Study

A direct-observation and EHR-audit study of 155 physicians across primary care and four specialties found physicians spent a median of 16.0 minutes per patient encounter using the EHR, with chart review (33%), documentation (24%), and ordering (17%) consuming the bulk of that time. The paper supports the case for a fast, scannable patient summary surface that reduces the chart-review tax during ambulatory encounters.

More Tethered to the EHR: EHR Workload Trends Among Academic Primary Care Physicians, 2019-2023

A longitudinal analysis of EHR-use metadata from academic primary care physicians found total EHR time per scheduled hour rose 5.3% and after-hours "pajama time" rose 11.4% between 2019 and 2023, even as ambulatory FTE dropped 5.2%. The paper supports the case for tools that compress chart-review time at the point of care, including read-only patient summary surfaces that live on the provider companion.
