Demystifying serotonin syndrome (or serotonin toxicity)
This review highlights the importance of patient education in preventing and identifying serotonin toxicity (serotonin syndrome). It covers symptoms, causative drugs, and their mechanisms. Serotonin toxicity, usually from combining drugs that elevate serotonin, can cause neuromuscular, autonomic, and mental symptoms. Family physicians play a critical role by educating patients on recognizing symptoms and monitoring their treatment to prevent this condition.
