On October 15, we hosted What's Next for AI at Canvas, a live webinar where we laid out how we are building agents into Canvas, demoed the first of them, and announced how we will price them. Hyperscribe V2 was the first agent we priced publicly, at $0.60 per scribed visit with graduated volume discounts, and it is free for 2026. This post explains how we arrived at that price and publishes the market research behind it, with every competitor price linked to its source so you can check our math.
Hyperscribe V2 is the ambient scribe built into Canvas. A clinician starts recording from a side panel on the schedule or the chart and keeps working in Canvas during the visit. When the visit ends, Hyperscribe V2 drafts structured entries for the note, and the clinician accepts, edits or dismisses each one before signing.
Every entry the scribe writes becomes part of the same coded patient record the rest of Canvas runs on, so other agents and plugins can read and act on it right away through the SDK, with no export or integration in between. We call this our Deep Unified Architecture, and it is why a note documented by Hyperscribe V2 keeps working for the practice well after the visit ends.
Scribing is the AI capability we hear the most demand for across our customers, because documentation is the work clinicians most want an agent to take off their plate. That demand shaped how we built Hyperscribe V2, and so did the pricing data from the rest of the market and what our customers told us about using scribes day to day.
Why should I choose Hyperscribe V2?
The case for Hyperscribe V2 is that it is built into Canvas, and that integration does work a standalone scribe would leave to the provider.
- Hyperscribe V2 listens to the visit and proposes structured commands directly into the Canvas note, such as diagnoses, medications and orders, and the provider reviews and accepts each one. The output lands in the chart as coded data rather than as a block of text to copy and paste.
- It uses the note-taking workflow a practice already has in Canvas, so it fits into the charting flow the team already runs.
- The scribe runs inside the same system as the chart, which means there is no duplicate state and that other agents or deterministic workflows can combine with the scribe within the Canvas architecture sharing the same source of truth.
- Teams that build on Canvas can extend it. Several Canvas customers already run their own scribe and transcription plugins in production, and Hyperscribe V2 is built so that its parts can be replaced or customized without rebuilding the whole experience.
- It is billed the same way as every other Canvas agent, on the outcome it delivers, which provides flexibility for care models that might involve part-time providers or care teams with a variety of license types, without adding seat-based or fixed costs.
How are scribe products pricing in the outpatient care delivery market?
The research below comes from vendor pricing pages, help centers and press releases as of October 2026, and each source is deep linked. To compare seat prices with per-visit prices, the per-visit column assumes a provider who documents 100 visits a month and a 15-minute visit where pricing is based on audio time.
| Vendor | Type | Published price | Per visit (100 visits / mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canvas Hyperscribe V2 | EMR, per visit | $0.60 per visit with graduated volume discounts; free for 2026 | $0.60 at list |
| eClinicalWorks (Sunoh.ai) | EMR scribe, per user | $149 per user per month, labeled a limited-time price | $1.49 |
| Charm | EMR, per provider or per encounter | $125 per provider per month unlimited, or $2 per encounter with a $20 monthly minimum | $1.25, or $2.00 per encounter |
| AdvancedMD | EMR, per provider or per encounter | $100 per provider per month unlimited, or $0.99 per encounter | $1.00, or $0.99 per encounter |
| RXNT | EMR, per user | Included on RXNT EHR and Full Suite plans; $75 per month standalone after a 90-day trial capped at 30 notes | Included in plan, or $0.75 standalone |
| Cerbo | EMR, per provider | From $29 per provider per month; unlimited tier at $59 per provider per month for a limited time | $0.59 on unlimited |
| ICANotes | EMR add-on, per user | $49 per user per month on top of the base plan | $0.49 |
| SimplePractice | EMR add-on, per clinician | $35 per clinician per month after a 30-day trial (currently promoted at $17.50) | $0.35 |
| Jane | EMR add-on, per practitioner | 5 notes per month free; unlimited at $15 per practitioner per month | $0.15 |
| Healthie | EMR add-on, account-level hour pool | Unpublished monthly fee for 40 hours shared across the team, then $0.85 per hour, with monthly totals rounded up to the whole hour | Monthly fee unpublished; pool covers about 160 visits, then about $0.21 per visit on overage |
| Practice Better | EMR add-on, hours per practitioner | From $10 per practitioner per month; requires the Professional plan or higher | Hours-based |
| Elation | EMR, free allowance | 10 free AI notes per provider per month; unlimited upgrade by request with no published price | Free for 10 visits, then unpublished |
| athenahealth | EMR, bundled | athenaAmbient included in athenaOne at no additional cost | Bundled into the EMR subscription |
| Freed | Standalone scribe, per clinician | $39 to $119 per clinician per month across plans; the lowest plan caps at 40 notes | $0.59 to $0.79 on the unlimited Core plan |
| Scribe360 | Standalone scribe, practice-level encounter pool | Free for 25 encounters; $99 for 500, $249 for 1,000 encounters per month, shared across all physicians | About $0.20 to $0.25 when the practice uses its full pool (the vendor's own figures) |
| Doximity Scribe | Standalone app, free | Free for verified US physicians, NPs, PAs and medical students | $0 |
| AWS HealthScribe | Developer API, per audio second | $0.10 per minute of audio | About $1.50 for a 15-minute visit |
A few patterns stand out once the prices sit side by side.
- EMR-integrated scribes in primary care and multispecialty cluster at $75 to $149 per provider per month (RXNT, AdvancedMD, Charm and eClinicalWorks), and the two that publish a per-encounter rate charge $0.99 and $2.00.
- Behavioral and allied health EMRs price lower, from $10 to $49 per clinician per month, and several of them meter by notes or audio hours rather than offering unlimited use.
- Every seat price gets more expensive per visit as volume drops. A provider seeing 40 patients a month on a $100 seat pays $2.50 per visit, and the same provider pays $0.60 on Hyperscribe V2.
Isn't AI scribe usually bundled into the EMR?
That is how it is often marketed, but the label rarely matches what a practice pays. A scribe called bundled or free usually comes with a catch.
- A free allowance runs out fast. Elation's 10 free notes per provider cover a day or two of clinic, and its unlimited upgrade has no published price.
- Included often means included in a more expensive plan. RXNT includes Ambient IQ only on its EHR and Full Suite plans and charges $75 a month standalone.
- No additional cost means the cost sits inside the subscription. athenahealth includes athenaAmbient in athenaOne, so practices pay for it without seeing a price they can compare.
Running a scribe costs real money on every visit, and AWS charges developers $0.10 per minute of audio, about $1.50 for a 15-minute visit before any EMR integration. When a scribe is described as free, that cost is recovered somewhere else, so we publish the price per visit instead.
Why price AI agents on outcomes?
In general, we believe outcome-based pricing is where AI in healthcare has to go. A practice should be able to try an agent on real administrative work without committing to a seat for every provider, and a technology vendor should be paid in proportion to the work its agent actually completes.
- Each Canvas agent has its own outcome and its own pricing unit. For Hyperscribe V2 the outcome is a complete visit note, so the unit is a scribed visit; for our HIE agent the outcome is an up-to-date patient chart, so the unit is a completed chart reconciliation.
- A customer pays only for the agents it turns on, and only for the work those agents complete. A provider who sees 20 patients a month pays for 20 visits, and a provider who never opens the scribe pays nothing.
- The hard part in healthcare is that a single organization has many different jobs to be done, so outcome units are more nuanced than seats or tokens. We are taking on that complexity ourselves so that the bill reads in terms a practice already uses.
We put that pricing in the product, in Canvas Platform (platform.canvasmedical.com), where customers manage their Canvas instances, Studio projects and AI access. Anyone in an organization can see AI usage and spend by day under Inference → Usage, and a Billing admin can open Usage & Billing for month-to-date spend, credits, the rates behind every charge, and a CSV download. Usage is metered and shown in full even when it is credited, so a customer trying an agent for free still sees what that usage would have cost. When billing for an agent begins, its outcome units, such as scribed visits, will appear in Usage & Billing as their own line items and land on the regular monthly Canvas invoice.
Why a visit for Hyperscribe V2?
We looked at the three units the market uses today and found that each one measures something other than the finished note.
- A seat charges every provider the same amount regardless of volume. Our customers run team-based care with part-time providers, contractors and several license types, and a seat model makes the low-volume members of that team the most expensive per visit, which discourages the org-wide adoption that makes a scribe worth having.
- Minutes and hours of audio meter the input. A longer visit costs more to transcribe, but it does not produce a more valuable note, and a practice cannot easily forecast its total audio hours.
- Tokens are how AI vendors pay their own suppliers. A clinic manager has no way to estimate tokens in advance, while every practice already knows roughly how many visits it sees in a month.
A visit is a number every practice already tracks, it maps to the note a provider signs and bills, and it lets a customer forecast the monthly cost from its own schedule.
How do I get started?
Hyperscribe V2 is free for 2026. Starting in 2027, a practice pays $0.60 per scribed visit scaling down with volume, set by the visits it actually documents rather than by how many providers it employs. The Usage & Billing section of Canvas Platform shows the rate behind every charge. We are pricing every Canvas agent this way, on the outcome it completes, so the bill a practice reads matches the work its agents did.
