Protocol

Follow up after serotonergic medication initiation

Description

If patient is started on a medication in SSRI or SNRI class and has never taken this medication before, this protocol will send a webhook for patient education, create a task due in 2 weeks for care coordination team to check in with the patient regarding medication tolerability, and recommend a follow-up visit in 4 weeks.

Clinical notes

This protocol will initiate an appropriate follow-up cadence and patient education when patients are prescribed an SSRI or SNRI for the first time. SSRIs and SNRIs are grouped together for the purposes of workflow design given similar drug-drug interactions and follow-up needs. Typically, these medications have the biggest rate of discontinuation within the first 1-2 weeks due to side effects. However, they require 4-8 weeks of consistent use to see impact on the condition they are aiming to treat. Different programs may choose to do these two timed check-ins differently, but this workflow keeps the most streamlined approach of a care coordination team managing the first check in regarding tolerability and the clinician managing the second check in regarding efficacy.
